Buffalo Springfield – For What It’s Worth

I never thought a song from the late 1960’s would be so relevant today. Released December 23, 1966 performed by Buffalo Springfield “For What It’s Worth,” wasn’t originally written as an anti-war song but as a sort of protest against curfews enacted in Hollywood that caused riots between police and young people.

Because the songs release coincided with the Vietnam War and one of the largest anti-war protests at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, where 100,000 protesters met, and an additional 300,000 marched to the Pentagon in October of 1967, as well as the songs prevalence in many period movies such as Forest Gump, it has become synonymous with anti-war movements.

It came on my Amazon music station yesterday and it hit me how scarily accurate the words are still today. I decided I would add them here and make a quick post about it because as they say, history repeats itself. I will not discuss my political views here because it is not relevant or important. Everyone is entitled to their own, and entitled to be respected for theirs, and should be respectful of others, whether they agree with them or not. I simply felt this song is a “sign of the times” yet again and something to contemplate.

“There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it’s time we stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

There’s battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It’s s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, now, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down”
